About the ACT
The ACT is a standardized test measures students’ capacity for college-level English, math, reading, and science coursework. ACT scores are accepted by all colleges that require standardized test scores as part of the admissions process.
IvyPrep’s uniquely designed courses build on the skills and strategies necessary to score in the 95% range. All of our sessions are taught by subject experts who have scored above the 99th percentile on the ACT and are experts in teaching test-taking strategies.
+ What is on the ACT?
The ACT consists of four sections: English, math, reading, and science. The entire test is multiple-choice based. The English section measures students’ ability to edit/revise written English. The reading section tests students’ ability to read critically. The math section tests quantitative reasoning skills. The science section tests students’ ability to understand graphs, charts, and other forms of scientific representation.
+ How many questions are on the ACT?
The ACT consists of 215 multiple-choice questions in 4 sections: 75 questions on the English Test, 60 questions on the math test, 40 questions on the reading test, and 40 questions on the science test.
+ How is the ACT scored?
Each section of the ACT, regardless of how many questions the section contains, is cored out of 36. Students will receive a composite score that is the average of the 4 individual section scores. Students will also receive a STEM score and, if they take the option essay, an ELA score.
+ When should I take the ACT?
Take the test when you are ready, but start prep early. Most students who want competitive scores begin prep in the 9th or 10th grade, take their first test at the end of 10th grade, and achieve their highest scores near the end of 11th grade.
+ Should I take the SAT or the ACT?
Both tests are accepted at most colleges and universities. Your decision should be based on your test taking style. The SAT includes reading, writing, and math. The ACT includes reading, writing, math, and an a science section. If you have trouble with the verbal sections and/or excel in the sciences, doing well on the ACT science section will help bring up your composite score. The SAT is less time-intensive so if you work better slow and steady, you may do better on the SAT.
+ How can IvyPrep instructors prepare me for the ACT?
Our expert instructors, some with PhDs and others PhD candidates, write the practice books used in the classrooms. Up-to-date and consistent with the latest test specifications, our practice test books are designed for help students gain the skills and strategies needed to score above the 95th percentile. All of our instructors have degrees from Ivy League or top schools, and a minimum of 10 years’ teaching experience.
+ How many students in a typical ACT class?
The typical ACT class is limited to about 18 to 25 students. With smaller classes, our test experts can understand and connect with each student’s needs. For students who desire even more personalized attention, we offer one-on-one tutoring that is customized to fit each individual’s optimum pace.
